Governor Kenneth E. Mapp, of the U.S. Virgin Islands, has ordered the territory's national guard to begin seizing guns and ammunition from citizens in preparation for Hurricane Irma's landfall to "maintain health, welfare, and safety."
Adjutant General Deborah Howell was instructed in the order signed by the governor "to take whatever actions she considers necessary to carry out the assigned mission" of maintaining and restoring public order.
"The Adjutant General is authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission," the governor said in the order.
The order went into effect Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. and will stay in effect till there is either written or verbal permission to cease the order by the governor.
"This is not an opportunity to go outside and try to have fun with a hurricane," Mapp told ABC News. "It's not time to get on a surfboard."
The Daily Caller has announced that Irma has gained enough strength to become a Category 5 storm stating...
Irma strengthened to a Category 5 storm Tuesday, with wind gusts hitting 175 miles an hour. Irma’s eye is expected to pass just north of the heart of the U.S. Virgin Islands on Wednesday and bring four to eight inches or rain and 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts.
