Crashing A Pro-Police Rally
Several weeks ago, The Freedom Paradox broke the story of a rookie South Whitehall Police Officer whom had shot and killed an unarmed man outside an amusement park.
In response to that incident, protests broke out on both sides.
Understandably, the family of the victim were joined by members of the community to protest/mourn at the location of the killing.
The strange (and offensive) counter-protest was made up of local police and their supporters. Obviously, people can support whomever they want, however to choose to do so across the street from a memorial for the victim was in bad taste. Especially, when the nature of the death led a very pro-police District Attorney to publicly disavow the officer's training and actions.
Despite officials charging the officer with manslaughter, the pro-police rally continued. In the background, you can clearly see the flowers left by loved ones of Joseph Santos.
Freedom Paradox members decided to show up to the rally. The goal was not to start trouble, but to start a dialogue in order to learn why these public servants feel so different from the public. Mostly, the goal was to get them to think about how their actions reflect how the public perceives them.
Overall, it was a good conversation. To give people the opportunity to think outside the box and to see the opposite side is always a good thing.
